Post subject: Sura 3 - Comments and Feedback Reply with quote

Salam brother BMZ and all,

Brother BMZ I wanted to start translating sura 4 today however I was stumped with the verb Yattaqi, it seems I won't be able to translate it as Fear, it won't work, there must be another English word that reflects its Arabic meaning, the problem is, it seems the Arabic word has many meanings, what do you think I should use as a unified meaning for that verb?, for the noun of it Muttaqin, I will use the pious

please be aware that the verb Yattaqi is mostely used with Allah, however there are many other things that is used with, like Hell, Suffering, etc etc, it is sort of AVOIDING, what do you think mate, this is important to resolve before I start sura 4 because I will have to recheck the first 3 suras after we settle on a meaning for this tough Arabic verb then start on sura 4

Cheers

Salaams, Ahmed

I will try my best. When doing a translation, don't look for a particular word. It becomes easy when you keep the sentence in mind and think how we understand that in Arabic.

You are right. It is not necessary to use the word 'fear'. I understand the feeling getting stumped. LOL! It is tough and you are right in saying that Arabic has too many meanings and choosing a particular word becomes a difficult task. Now,

"Ya ayyuhan-nasut-taqu Rabbokum".

Literal translation: "O'People, fear your Lord"

The message is about keeping in mind that Allah created people out of one life from which Allah created the mate and out of them came a multitude of men and women. We are thus to keep in mind
or think of Allah in whose name we ask or demand the ties of kinship or relations.

Thus the simplest word, you could use, would then be Be conscious of Allah, as the message wants us to keep in mind that Allah did the creating.

Thus the verse can be translated as "O'People, be conscious of Allah".......

Please let me know if this helps.

BMZ

Hello mate

Thank you very much, very helpful indeed, I guess I will go with what you suggested, it makes sense to me, and you are right I when I started sura 4, I was stumped at verse 1 because the verb Yattaqi is used with two things in the that verse, Allah and the Wombs

so fearing the wombs was the one that stumped me, now using your suggestion, it should make great sense all over the Quran

Thanks heaps mate

You are welcome mate. That mention of just the word ARHAAM is so beautiful. If we read carefully, it would simply mean "Be conscious of Allah and the wombs that bore you."

It is such a huge command to respect women and mothers, so beautifully said in the Chapter on Women,
Al-Nisaa.
